ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF PARALLEL IMPORTATION FOR A FORTUNE 100 FIRM
THE CHALLENGE   ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE

The political threat of instituting universal parallel importation in the United States has significant financial and profit implications for the pharmaceutical industry.

The client asked MattsonJack to help it understand the key facts about parallel importation and what specific risks parallel importation poses to the firm.

MattsonJack analyzed the strategic and financial risks parallel importation poses in the next five years to the client's current product line, agents awaiting regulatory approval and agents in Phase III trials.

Using a fact-based approach, MattsonJack assessed the potential level of financial exposure and the relative magnitude of these risks.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

The client's executive committee reviewed MattsonJack's economic and policy risk analyses for their portfolio and accepted MattsonJack's conclusion that parallel importation was a low-probability, low-impact risk.

MattsonJack's recommendation enabled the client to reprioritize its policy and pricing activities for the upcoming year.

PRICING AND REIMBURSEMENT: DETERMINING COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL
THE CHALLENGE   ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE

The client needed to evaluate the commercial potential of a compound in Phase III clinical trials. The compound will most likely be reserved for second-line therapy for target patients due to potential side effects and dosing administration.

A competitor had launched in the same class that was first to market; thus, it was important to understand the level of product differentiation based on available safety, efficacy, and administration data.

Further, emerging data on sequential therapy with other classes of drugs suggested that new treatment paradigms may affect the commercial potential of the product.

The client engaged MattsonJack's assistance in developing a detailed forecast to help assess the commercial potential of the compound.

MattsonJack captured the perspectives of physicians, payers and patients through primary market research designed to:

  • identify which patient segments offer key opportunities
  • determine anticipated usage patterns including sequential use of other classes of drugs
  • understand compliance issues considering the high cost of the product and relatively benign nature of disease before fracture
  • assess price sensitivity and determine the expected formulary status
  • assess the impact of a potential risk (black box scenarios)

MattsonJack used assumptions developed from the primary market research as the foundation of its forecast.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

The client adopted MattsonJack's forecast and, based on their satisfaction, subsequently requested MattsonJack's assistance in assessing the commercial potential of several products under consideration for licensing.
